Year End Letter From The President

Last year was a very exciting and rewarding year for us in that we organized for the first time as a non-profit entity under Princeton University’s umbrella.

We had our First Annual Meeting in March in Las Vegas which many of you attended and where our new Constitution was ratified. Professor Emeritus Fred Greenstein was our featured guest lecturer. We heard committee reports including a report from our ASC Chair Matt Mullin ’01.

In April, we received the amazing news that 5 Nevada high school Seniors had been admitted. Later, we learned that one more Senior was accepted off the Wait List. Even better news yet was that ALL SIX young men and women (2 from the North, 4 from the South) decided to matriculate to Old Nassau! So, this Spring, our numbers swelled by at least a dozen!

In July, we had our First Annual Alumni Event in Northern Nevada at the home of John and Carol Ann Badwick (p’11,p’13) in Reno. This event was a great success.

As we begin planning our 2010 calendar of events to include, but not be limited to, our Second Annual Meetings in Las Vegas and Reno, a busy ASC interviewing schedule and other intimate gatherings, we must also ask you for your support in helping your Association grow.

Last year, we started up on a “shoe string” and ended up with a slightly negative balance. We now have a better handle on what our costs will be for 2010. Your tax deductible contributions will go towards defraying costs of events, purchasing stationery, paying Alumni Council dues and supporting ASC and outreach efforts as we build our fledgling Association.

Please mail in your 2010 PAAN dues for $25.00 per person payable to Princeton Alumni Association of Nevada and attention to:

Nick Donath ’83, 10956 Royal Highlands Street, Las Vegas, NV 89141

If you are unable to contribute this year, remember that this in no way affects your standing as a member of PAAN!

On a personal note, I look forward to seeing and meeting all of you during 2010, and, it is with great gratitude and love for Princeton that I would like to wish you and your families a healthy and peaceful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Nick Donath ‘83
President

Tiger Football Game in Reno!

Adrian "Woody" Woodhouse '59 has asked me to send all of you this reminder about the planned get-together this Thursday in Reno for the televised Princeton-Colgate football game!

We are meeting at the Brew House this Thursday on the corner of S. McCarran and Kietzke between Marie Callender's and the Bank of the West. We have a room reserved from 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm to see the game. Kickoff is at 4 pm on ESPNU (7 pm EDT).

All Tigers are welcome, whether you have responded before or not. We are running on an individual tab basis, so if you want to stop by on the way home from work, have a beer and appetizer, that's fine. The team can use all our support!

Come meet some fellow local Tigers! Hope to see you there.

Inaugural Meeting Wrap-up

By most accounts, our First Annual Meeting on March 4th was a success! Thank you to all of you who attended. Because of you, we have ratified our Constitution and formally launched the newest Princeton Alumni Association.

The Princeton Classes represented spanned 50 years -- from 1951 to 2001 (each with two attendees)! We had members present from Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Reno and Incline Village.

Professor Emeritus and Barbara Greenstein travelled from Princeton -- it was Professor Greenstein's first visit to Las Vegas since the 1950s and Barbara was able to tour the Strip for her very first time!

Our new Secretary, Tim Lyons '94, will be circulating minutes from the meeting.

I am pleased to also report that Greg Duncan '84, eGovernment Officer for the City of Las Vegas, has agreed to accept an Executive Committee post as PAAN Technology Chair. Greg will be creating our new website shortly. We welcome comments and suggestions for all of you as we begin this process.

I look forward to seeing you this Summer in Reno! We would like to have one more Executive Committe Officer from Northern Nevada. If you are interested please email me or phone me (702.460.0718) and I can discuss potential positions with you.

I believe I have sent email acknowledgements to all of those who have paid their dues and donated. If I have left you out, please let me know and I will provide an acknowledgement to you for tax purposes. (Our dues are $15.00 and other small donations will be graciously accepted as well.)

Sincerely,

Nick Donath '83

March 4, 2009 meeting minutes

Members in Attendance (from the sign in sheets): Nick Donath '83, Matt Mullin '01, Tim Lyons '94, Ed Phelan '69, Cam Ferenbach '69, Andy Davlin '51, Greg Duncan '84, Eric Van '01, Ty TrueBlood '68, Dick Geyer '57, Bill Silbey '81, Alan Feld '51, Bret Birdsong '87, Norm Stephens '64

5:45pm: Meeting called to order by Nick Donath, President.

Introductory remarks, and explanation of the alumni association, and membership definitions; members are any current or past undergraduate or graduate student, parents, spouses/partners that live in Nevada. Dues paying members are dues paying members of the PAA Nevada. The leadership is currently three people: two from the south (Nick Donath,
President/Treasurer Matt Mullin, ASC Chair), one from the North (Tim Lyons, Secretary). Eventual growth of this to be potentially two or more additional members (ideally one from each region) - perhaps a VP, and a chair of activities/programs as well as a membership chair.
Proposal to have meetings twice annually - in Las Vegas in March (the first Wed of the month), and in the Reno area in the summer (this summer John and Carol Badwick, current parents, are offering to host the event). Additionally, the organization would like to plan receptions for admitted students/parents.

Report by Matt Mullin, ASC Chair:

ASC Progress Report

1) Chair history - Dr. Alan Feld, C. Elizabeth Raymond, Cam Ferenbach, Nick Donath, Matthew Mullin
2) Matt started managing the ASC Interview process in 2005
3) Applications really started booming in 2006
4) In 2006 we had 36 applications with 7 active volunteers (2 admitted, 5 waitlisted)
5) In 2007 we had 55 applications with 11 active volunteers (2 admitted, both accepted)
6) In 2008 we had 76 applications with 19 active volunteers (4 admitted, 3 accepted, 4 waitlisted)
7) This year in 2009 we had 78 applications with 28 total volunteers and 23 actively interviewing this year, as a committee we successfully achieved our goal of reaching out to 100% of the applicants and engaging in interviews with 100% of the responsive students that chose to participate in the alumni interview process.
8) Future goals of the committee:
- More active engagement of college counselors
- More guidance for students in their early high school years
- More information provided to the admissions office of Nevada's top schools / programs
- More pro-active post-decision follow up with students that are accepted to help with some of the final decisions

Remarks by Tim Lyons, Secretary:

Introductory remarks, explanation of the role (to gather information not just at meetings but of the membership as a whole), and to request any help in gathering information on those present, those that might not be current in the tigernet, and to remind people not in attendance if possible of the event planned in the Reno area.

Resolution proposed by Nick Donath: to ratify the constitution of the PAA NV and to confirm the executive committee change (Secretary from Matt Mullin to Tim Lyons) - motion made, seconded, and approved unanimously by voice vote.

The meeting came to a close at approximately 6:30pm, when a 10-minute break was taken before the presentation by Professor Emeritus Greenstein.

After the presentation, pictures were taken for the PAW, refreshments were served, and the reception ended at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Tim Lyons, '94
Secretary
PAA Nevada
