Your PAAN officers, Matt Mullin '01 (ASC Chair), Greg Duncan '84 (Technology Chair), Tim Lyons '94 (Secretary) and I will all be there! Three of us are flying up from Las Vegas and are looking forward to a cooler day!

We have extended the invitation to include local Harvard and Yale alumni as well - several of whom will be attending!

Please RSVP to Woody Woodhouse '59 by email.

Event details:

Guest Speaker: Professor Lawrence Rosen, Princeton University Department of Anthropology

Date and Time: Saturday, August 7th from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: The Home of John and Carol Ann Badwick p'11, p'13, Reno, NV

Here is a brief "bio" of our guest speaker:

Lawrence Rosen’s interest in anthropology developed while he was an undergraduate at Brandeis University, and during his junior year at the University of London. Initially, he wanted to do fieldwork for his Ph.D. in Indonesia, but after civil war broke out there he

transferred his project to Morocco, completing his degree at the University of Chicago in 1968.

He was immediately offered a job at Princeton but turned it down and spent the next three years on postdoctoral fellowships, including one at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He had always been interested in socio-legal problems, and decided to return for a law degree at Chicago (“a very primitive society, indeed!”). While in law school he developed his interests in the legal problems of Native Americans, and from time to time over the years has done pro bono work for a variety of Indian groups.

After three years on the faculty at Duke University he came to Princeton in 1977. Since that time he has also held an appointment as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, and has been a visiting professor at the law schools of Georgetown, Northwestern, and the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1981, he was named to the first group of recipients of a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Award. He has been a fellow of colleges at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He served as chair of his department at Princeton for eleven years; he has also served as chair of the University’s Judicial Committee, as a member of the Priorities [Budget] Committee, and on the panel that helped plan the Frist Campus Center. At Princeton he has also been awarded the President’s Distinguished Teaching Award and has been honored by the Ombudsman’s Office and several university women’s organizations. The author of seven books on North African society, Islamic law, American law, and the culture of Islam he is currently at work on a study of memory in Morocco. His newest book, Varieties of Muslim Experience, will be published by the University of Chicago Press in the spring of 2008.

It is definitely not too late to RSVP and come join fellow alumni and their guests for an afternoon of merriment and fascinating discussion!

See you soon.

Nick

Nick Donath '83

President

Princeton-Johns Hopkins Lacrosse game gathering on March 6th

We will be gathering at the Fireside Restaurant and Tavern (1785 E. Cactus Avenue) located on the corner of St. Rose and Spencer in Henderson for the Princeton-Johns Hopkins Lacrosse game on ESPNU at 10:30 a.m. March 6th. We have a room reserved with TVs and the game will also be on some flat screens at the bar. We will have some light appetizers and it will be a cash bar. Please RSVP as soon as you can. But, if you have to decide last minute, that will be fine as well! Thank you to those of you who have already confirmed that you will be there!

Our next Southern Nevada event will be an admitted students social at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bucholz '65 in Red Rock Country Club between 2:00-4:00 pm on April 10th. Please mark your calendars. For those up North, it appears that April 10th may also be a good day to also watch the Princeton/Syracuse game on ESPNU in the afternoon. I will forward more information on this soon. Also, I have received a commitment from Princeton that they will send us a speaker again this year and I have tentatively scheduled this event for either July or August in Reno.

One piece of GREAT NEWS: We have applied for and won a $300.00 grant from the Committee on Regional Associations (CORA) to "take our association to the next level." These funds will be used to reach out to members in our region who do not have (or check) email. We will be purchasing stationery and postage and sending regular "snail mail" reports to all.

Thanks to the approximately 20 of you who have already mailed in your 2010 annual dues. We will be mailing out receipts for your records. If you have not yet done so, please mail in your dues of $25.00 per person to: Nick Donath, PAAN, 10956 Royal Highlands Street, Las Vegas, NV, 89141. (Please remember that payment of dues in no way affects your standing as a member of PAAN.)

Thanks and see you on March 6th!

Nick Donath '83
President

2010 Events Schedule

I am writing you as our plans are coming together for this year's events and gatherings.

In Southern Nevada, we are planning to meet casually on March 6th at 10:30 am to watch the Princeton/Johns Hopkins Lacrosse game on ESPNU. Professor Emeritus Fred Greenstein was our featured guest lecturer. We heard committee reports including a report from our ASC Chair Matt Mullin ’01.

In April, we received the amazing news that 5 Nevada high school Seniors had been admitted. Later, we learned that one more Senior was accepted off the Wait List. Even better news yet was that ALL SIX young men and women (2 from the North, 4 from the South) decided to matriculate to Old Nassau! So, this Spring, our numbers swelled by at least a dozen!

In July, we had our First Annual Alumni Event in Northern Nevada at the home of John and Carol Ann Badwick (p’11,p’13) in Reno. This event was a great success.

In October, members of PAAN congregated in a fine establishment in Reno to watch a very tough Tiger Football team do battle with Colgate all the way to triple overtime on ESPN.

As we begin planning our 2010 calendar of events to include, but not be limited to, our Second Annual Meetings in Las Vegas and Reno, a busy ASC interviewing schedule and other intimate gatherings, we must also ask you for your support in helping your Association grow.

Last year, we started up on a “shoe string” and ended up with a slightly negative balance. We now have a better handle on what our costs will be for 2010. Your tax deductible contributions will go towards defraying costs of events, purchasing stationery, paying Alumni Council dues and supporting ASC and outreach efforts as we build our fledgling Association.

Please mail in your 2010 PAAN dues for $25.00 per person payable to Princeton Alumni Association of Nevada and attention to:

Nick Donath ’83, 10956 Royal Highlands Street, Las Vegas, NV 89141

If you are unable to contribute this year, remember that this in no way affects your standing as a member of PAAN!

On a personal note, I look forward to seeing and meeting all of you during 2010, and, it is with great gratitude and love for Princeton that I would like to wish you and your families a healthy and peaceful holiday season.

Sincerely,

Nick Donath ‘83

President

Tiger Football Game in Reno!

Adrian "Woody" Woodhouse '59 has asked me to send all of you this reminder about the planned get-together this Thursday in Reno for the televised Princeton-Colgate football game!

We are meeting at the Brew House this Thursday on the corner of S.
